Osteoarthritis and the Benefits of Physiotherapy

09/03/2026

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common joint conditions affecting adults, particularly as we age. It occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones gradually breaks down over time. As this protective cartilage becomes thinner, the joint may become painful, stiff, and less mobile. Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine, and it can make everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or standing up from a chair more difficult.

Although osteoarthritis is often described as "wear and tear," modern research shows that appropriate movement and exercise are among the most effective ways to manage the condition. Many people avoid activity because they worry it may worsen their symptoms, but avoiding movement can often lead to further stiffness, muscle weakness, and increased pain over time.

Physiotherapy plays an important role in helping people manage osteoarthritis safely and effectively. A physiotherapist will assess joint mobility, muscle strength, movement patterns, and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to joint stress. From this assessment, an individualised treatment plan can be developed to support joint health and improve function.

Strengthening the muscles around a joint is particularly important. Strong muscles help absorb load and reduce the amount of stress placed on the joint itself. For example, strengthening the quadriceps and gluteal muscles can significantly reduce pain and improve function in people with knee or hip osteoarthritis. Improving mobility and flexibility can also help reduce joint stiffness and make daily activities easier.

In addition to exercise, physiotherapists provide guidance on activity modification and pacing strategies. Learning how to gradually increase activity levels and manage joint load can allow individuals to remain active while minimizing flare-ups.

With the right support, many people with osteoarthritis can continue to lead active and independent lives. Physiotherapy focuses not only on reducing pain but also on improving strength, mobility, and confidence in movement. Early management can make a significant difference in maintaining long-term joint health and overall quality of life.

If you are experiencing persistent joint pain or stiffness, seeking advice from a physiotherapist can be an important step toward managing osteoarthritis and maintaining an active lifestyle.
