Dry Needling in Tuggeranong

Dry needling is a technique used by physiotherapists to target myofascial trigger points — tight, sensitive bands within a muscle that can contribute to pain, restricted movement, or referred pain in other areas of the body. It involves inserting a fine, single-use sterile needle directly into the affected muscle tissue.
Dry needling is often used as one part of a broader physiotherapy treatment plan, alongside manual therapy, exercise, and education, rather than as a standalone treatment.
What dry needling may help with
Dry needling may be used to help manage:
- Myofascial trigger points and localised muscle tightness
- Chronic muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and back
- Tendinopathies, when used alongside a loading program
- Headaches related to muscle tension in the neck and upper back
- Restricted movement associated with muscle guarding
Suitability for dry needling depends on your individual presentation and history, and will be discussed with you as part of your assessment.
How is it different from acupuncture?
While both techniques use similar needles, dry needling is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles, targeting specific muscle and trigger point locations related to your presenting symptoms, rather than the meridian-based framework used in traditional acupuncture.
What to expect
Your physiotherapist will explain the technique, discuss any risks, and answer questions before proceeding. Sensations during treatment vary between people and can include a dull ache, a brief muscle twitch, or mild discomfort at the needle site. Dry needling is only used with your informed consent and is typically incorporated into a session alongside other physiotherapy treatment.
